The güipil is the traditional blouse created and worn by Mayan women. Many designs are unique to the artisan’s home town. They literally are pieces of art embroidered onto cloth canvases. Here in New Mexico, they are often worn over other blouses, open on the sides as seen in the photos. Others sew side seams, as do Guatemalan women, and wear them as a single blouse. These güipiles are recycled. We buy them at a weekend textile market in Panajachel, Guatemala.
